2021.11.28 09:10 V-AceT SMT V - Limitations and future potential
Just to preface, this post is not a subjective insult to V, but rather an Avid fans disappointment 35 hours into the game. Having played 3,4,4A,SJR and a bit of 1 and If, i can see signs of series progression, and having splurged on the "fall of man edition", i feel like i got my moneys worth but im left feeling disappointed after completing the Demon Kings Castle. Once again, this has more to do with how the game runs on switch than anything else
Performance & Slowdown: The performance is very very poor. I love this game for what it is, but its technical short-comings are something i find genuinely distracting. I am not someone who values visuals over game play,infact im aware i have a positive bias towards SMT and the JRPG genre as a whole, but SMT V can be a nightmare to play
Frame Pacing: This iteration of the game on switch is borderline frustrating. The camera pans with intense judder and drops frame consistently on the open world. Trying to pan the camera in Chiyoda or any of the open world sections have perceptible frame-time spikes, and half-second jitters, making traversal often very disorienting. Compound this with the insanely laggy and half frame rate distant demon animation (15 fps?), alongside the slow transition screen when accessing game menu with "X" can become annoying. Sadly V on switch due to hardware limitations also has incorrect frame pacing, which makes the games movement very erratic
Extra: As a result of this, jumping can feel delaying and ?possible input lag when the hardware is being taxed
Slow Auto Battle Mode: As with every other game, pressing X will initiate auto-battle mode. This is an absolute necessity, as during gameplay, in most fights you will end up autoing to grind macca or exp. In V however, due to possible bandwidth or cpu bottle neck, it will often hitch and stutter for a second, where it feels less responsive and slower in practice compared to past entries such as 4, 3, SJR
Limited memory bandwidth: Another very minor yet repetitive issue is texture loading and pop-in. Everytime you fuse, fight or look at demons, it takes a solid 1 second for the full texture to load from the low poly model. Not a game breaker, but insanely distracting after extened hours of play. This is also annoying, when you realise most of the game world asset have a similar behaviour, specially with pop-ins.
Terrible Motion Blur: The game is choppy, runs at sub-30 and has bad frame pacing with slow transitions. Can motion blur fix this? No. As far as i can tell, V does not use per object motion blur, resulting in a smeared picture when you pan the camera. Combine that with hitching and bad performance, the motion blur can genuinely cause dizziness or fatigue. At the very least an option to disable it should be a minimum requirement.
Unused buttons: The Battle UI has some fundamentals short-comings where all the controller inputs are not utilised. Shoulder triggers serve no purpose, and the games always takes multiple clicks to get actions done. Unused buttons, such as L can be assigned to Menu, or ZL could have been assigned to "Guard". Im surprised we still have to cancel out of attack, manually select guard, then change back again just for battles, where majority of the buttons are not even used.
Story: Doesnt need to be amazing, but SMT V focuses a lot on being ambitious on a hardware as limited as switch. But the story is by far the weakest aspect, where 30 hours in, i am not playing it for its story, just the mechanics i enjoy. As i have not completed the game, it would be unfair to fully judge it, but considering im level 60 and what ive seen so far is not interesting, i wont hold my breath.
Possible PC and PS4 port: Now i dont think the game is bad by any means, everything ive mentioned has to do with the technical limitations of the platform the game, and the scope the team aimed for using UE4, which is really a poor choice for switch to begin with. UE4 games have never ran well on this hardware, and i dont think Atlus would have used it, if not for porting it over to PC and future consoles/Nintendo hardware iteration
I for one would love for this to be on PC or any other platform that wont gimp the game. I cant care less about gate-keeping, specially when a designed product is failing to run as intended due to hardware limitations. If anything, more platforms = expansion, and more playing SMT. Playing this on PC, with better performance would be a game changer and change this from an exercise in frustration to absolute blast.
Addit: Once again, some people might have higher tolerances for these issues, but these technical issues exist. Pointing it out is valid criticism, specially when the abundance of it can make the game unplayable for some. Specially if they want to play something they love. I can only hope this is either fixed (unlikely, as switch is already hardware limited and possibly optimised well to even reach this level of performance) or improved, as this only serves to make the experience better for everyone else.
