Sort of new to reddit so didn’t know if this was the best place to ask this but anyways, with the rise of crypto currencies along the last decade each year we’ve been introduced to concepts and ideas that didn’t seem possible before and with that I think to myself does anyone think sometime in the near future you will be able to invest into a song or upcoming artists as an asset predicting them to do good or bad and have legitimate returns based on this. I’m also not the best with crypto so wasn’t sure how to word this but hopefully someone understands what i’m trying ti get at.

2022.01.28 16:17 DaEvilSpongeOMG Need some insight/advice; potentially getting fired
I've been keeping this to myself as I have nobody else to talk to about this, and have been reading other people's experience on reddit and other places.. but I would appreciate a personalized insight.
I recently started a new role 3 months ago as a fully remote data analyst in a completely new industry I have very little to no knowledge of. Prior to this, I had 3 1/2 years of experience in an unrelated role, with only 1 year of it having analytical experience (shallow waters so to speak technical skill wise, but made really good impact business wise). It seemed clear that the job was entry level and that they are willing to train and help me learn as I go.
The reason for my post is that my gut is telling me I might get fired. My team lead has changed attitude towards me in the way she sends messages, where in the first 1 1/2 month she has been extremely nice and encouraging whenever I asked questions, giving thumbs up, professional courtesy hearts, etc (Microsoft Teams). Now whenever I ask questions, she just seems to be a bit distant and giving me subtle hints like you should know this by now for certain things. Generally gives me the vibe of her not wanting to be asked questions, even though it was welcomed and encouraged in the beginning, not just for the purposes of new hiring. Also, recently she pointed out a question I asked not saying it directly but giving the vibe of "are you really asking that" in our team chat when answering me.
In addition to this, a coworker who was hired with the same role at the same time as me (team is expanding.. at least what they said) was laid off exactly at the 3 month mark. Most likely it was due to performance issues/culture fit. And it gets worse.. on top of that, a coworker who was there for a while came back from paid leave, as well as another person from a different department coming into the team as a promotion. This is when my fear of getting fired started.
I've been making minor mistakes in reports we send out to clients frequently and in general, ever since the paranoia happened because I am constantly in fear of losing my job as this is my first stepping stone to a career in analytics/data science and I need this experience + on my resume. Since day 1, I've literally went from 0 to 100, knowing very little to creating professional dashboards with Tableau and a UX/UI design style with an iphone app feel to it with PowerBI (super proud of this one), using Python to help automate our reports/files, and Excel templates for reports, calculations, etc. for us and especially to our clients. In addition to this, I've been looking at implementing regression analysis and artificial neural network tests so that I can help better our business with our clients, as nobody has done something like this in our company and I feel it would be of tremendous value. I also know SQL but a database is currently in progress of being implemented. In terms of technical requirements (all self-taught, and I am super proud of myself honestly!) and culture fit (coworkers and I get along well), I know I am a really good fit currently in both.. or maybe not?
I am salaried to work only for 40 hours a week and my team lead made it very clear to everyone that you NEVER have to work above that. However, I have been working 60-70 hours a week and weekends since I started just to get into my role quickly and develop these technical skills on my own. I did this because I LOVED the work I was doing and learning all these skills, and I've always wanted to learn/develop them all while in a professional setting. Now, I don't feel excited anymore with the thought of me getting fired despite all my efforts, due to my fear. I've been losing a lot of sleep as well due to that, which further makes me prone to making more mistakes, anxiety, etc. Just yesterday I worked 13 hours straight to get a project done, and for the first time in my life at a job.. I felt like I was going to cry. Normally in the past I know my team lead would give us more days to finish but like I said...
I am not going to leave the role for another as I don't feel confident that I may be able to land another role like this with only 3 1/2 months experience, in the case hiring managers will see it as a red flag. I'm going to try to stay as long as I can, keep my head down, and just avoid asking questions and figure them out on my own going forward.
If anyone can give some insight, perhaps you had a similar experience.. I would love to hear about it. Thank you so much for taking the time reading.
TLDR: I think I'm getting fired due to my team lead's attitude change towards me, a coworker fired who was hired at the same time/role as me, a veteran member returning from leave, a member promoted from a different department to the team, and my fear causing me to make recurring minor mistakes.

2022.01.28 16:17 DJDoubleDave How do you handle user concerns about call recording?
Hello all, first some background. My company transitioned to remote work during covid. We issue people laptops, and use teams, including calling plans. Calls are not recorded. there is no out of the box feature that does this, nor do we have any add-in service that does. (MEETINGS can be recorded. there is a little red ball in the corner and it notifies all participants when someone presses record, that's not the issue here.)
I've been trying to assuage some concerns from about 3 or 4 users about using the teams calling. They have shifted to only ever making calls using their personal cell phone. The reason given for this (so I hear, they don't' say this to me) is that they are concerned that their calls are being secretly recorded, and presumably listed to.
If it was just this, I wouldn't really care, people can choose to use a personal phone, it doesn't make any difference to me. The reason I'm concerned is that it's slowly spreading. It started with just 2 people, but now more people on that team have also stopped using the phone system over concerned that they are being secretly recorded.
Some of these people have also recently stopped using the corporate VPN, and have been doing some elaborate workarounds to avoid connecting to it, also based on the concern that it's secretly tracking them, or installing spyware, or something. It isn't, it's just a basic corporate VPN, it only pushes out routes to internal resources.
I'm not really sure how I should handle this. I'm the main teams admin. I feel quite confident that the company is not secretly recording anyone, since if we were, it would have been me who would have to put it in place. I set up the and manage the whole teams system (and the VPN).
Should I just ignore it? Like I said, I don't really care if people prefer to use their personal phones, but I feel like I'm letting a cultural problem in the company fester if I can't ease people's concerns.
What do you guys think I should do? Any experience with an issue like this before?

2022.01.28 16:17 wjbc I just finished listening to Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir, read by Ray Porter. Here’s my spoiler free review and thoughts. Well, one light spoiler with my warning beforehand.
Spoiler free bottom line:
5/5. Project Hail Mary is one of the best science fiction books I’ve read. This novel is great “hard” science fiction, full of applied science that actually makes sense, once you accept a few plausible but fictional descriptions of alien life forms and their abilities. You don’t have to be a scientist to understand or appreciate it, either. Author Andy Weir does a remarkable job of explaining himself without dumbing down the science.
It’s no accident that the fictional narrator is also a middle school science teacher. It explains his desire and ability to teach basic concepts to the non-scientist reader. It's like the fictional narrator wrote his memoir for bright middle school students and adults with about a middle school level understanding of science. That's not a spoiler, just an analogy. Although the book is written in the form of a fictional first person account I'm not saying whether a fictional memoir ever gets written or read.
Detailed review with mild spoiler:
SPOILER WARNING. Now to the most implausible part of the story — the politics. I won’t go into details. And if you want zero spoilers, don’t read any farther. But this is something you learn very early on as the premise of the story. So it’s a light spoiler at most. Okay, warning given.
Very early on we learned that there’s an existential threat to human life. But instead of squabbling about it until it’s too late, the countries of Earth unite and give a technocrat dictatorial powers over all of their armies in order to get things done. That's it, that's the spoiler.
My reaction to this? Fat chance.
But I don’t fault Weir for this. In fact, I think he’s making a point about climate change. This is an alternative universe where governments actually listen to scientists. It’s a “what if” scenario, not necessarily a plausible one.
As such, it’s far from utopic, but it is optimistic. Weir supposes that humanity can and will unite to survive existential threats like climate change. They might suffer losses, but they can survive, and so can civilization. It’s never too late — but it would help a lot if governments would acknowledge the emergency and help.
Back in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when Americans were riding high after WW2, American science fiction writers had boundless optimism about the marvels of technology. The Cold War humbled them a bit — suddenly nuclear war seemed all too likely. But in the 1960s Americans were still optimistic they would come out on top, especially after they landed men on the Moon.
I won’t go through every decade since, but suffice it to say that today’s hard science fiction is much less optimistic about humanity’s future. Existential threats have become the norm, the threat of nuclear war now being just one of several, and many authors predict a dystopic future.
Weir, though, harkens back to the optimism of the 1950s while acknowledging that it won’t be easy and might be a close thing. He has a lot of faith in science and technology but less faith in politicians and the uneducated public. I think he has made it his mission to get us excited about technological possibilities again, even as he acknowledges that things can go wrong.
The protagonists of Project Hail Mary don’t always get along — indeed there are some major conflicts — but when it comes down to it they have a “can do” attitude. They still have faith in science and technology. Weir still has faith, too. It’s almost nostalgic, reminding me of the optimism of 1950s and 1960s authors like Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke.
I hope Weir is right to be hopeful, because if technology doesn’t save us, I don’t know what will. The pandemic is another good example of this — science and technology found not one but several vaccines in record time, and yet much of the world refuses to get vaccinated. Science and technology may hold the solution to climate change, but will the world get behind the effort to solve it? Weir is like a cheerleader saying “let’s do it, whatever it takes.”
But don’t get me wrong, this novel is no political discourse or philosophical treatise. It’s not a boring science lesson either. Oh, there were times when I skimmed over a few math and science lessons, but for the most part this is a rollicking good yarn about a great adventure full of emotional highs and lows, losses and discoveries, setbacks and triumphs, twists and turns. It’s also about a wonderful friendship.
TL;DR: It’s fun, never fear! I highly recommend it.
For audio listeners — Ray Porter does a great job of voicing multiple characters and keeping them all distinct. He is a great voice artist. A few special audio effects are employed nicely as well. I highly recommend his narration. (And I only paid $7 in a recent sale on Audible! Sorry, I can’t tell if that sale price is still available — when I search it just says it’s already in my library.)

could someone please explain to me the bizarre nature of hitman 3 demo on steam?
I have downloaded the 'demo' of 60gb or so and was forced to tick the box to receive marketing bullshit from IOI to even continue.
I'm in online mode, I ticked their fucking marketing box (this shit should absolutely be illegal by the way) and... what now? everything in hitman 3 seems locked.
Where is the demo, exactly?

2022.01.28 16:17 F-Panda12345 Job searching before parental leave?
I'm a SFA making around 85k base in the Midwest, and it looks like there are significant comp increase opportunities available.
Simple, find a new job right? But the wrinkle is current job offers 6 weeks paternity leave if I stick around, and my wife is 3mo pregnant due in August.
How would you navigate the situation when leaving for other FPandA jobs? Both in terms of not destroying candidacy, as well as having some idea of if I am eligible for any paid paternity at the new job?
Obviously hiding paternity then "springing it" on the hiring manager doesn't sound like a good idea for the relationship. But I'm not quite sure when to bring it up, and how to handle properly for all involved?
I'm not demanding 6+ weeks at the new job, and if comp is a big step up it could make sense to still take a job with no paid paternity leave and try to just take some vacation days, but more is better of course. Also I lose all FMLA protections since new job will be under 1yr, but not sure if that's a real issue.
Any thoughts or advice about my situation, or the general topic, are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!
